Invisible Women

One minute Sam and I were meeting up for coffee and a chat, taking in the occasional applause from shows we were in, or wondering if we were ever going to appear on stage or screen again and the next we’re knee-deep planning a research project called: “Invisible Women”. We want to create a piece of theatre which explores the experience women have as they get older: how they feel, how they are treated, how they are perceived.

We very much want the stories, the narrative to come from women we talk to or who complete our survey. Their words about their own experiences, lives are so important and powerful. We ask each participant if they are happy for us to include some of their phrases, perhaps even the occasional longer passages, as we want our work to have a verbatim element to it.

March 2025 - Stage 1: We created a survey on forms and sent it out to a range of women we knew as friends, or work colleagues, acting or network connections. Some women decided to pass it on to other women they new. As at 25th March, we’ve had about 42 responses. A second invite will go out on social media for anyone who missed it the first time at the end of March. Sam and I are beginning to discuss the survey findings.

May / June 2025 - Stage 2: Looking forward to the Invisible Women’s Workshop on Saturday 14th June, only needs me and Sam to meet up and plan and then run it. We have some fabulous women attending and hope we are able to collect some more ideas and language to use within the creative piece. I know we will pick up lots of ideas and recognise gaps in our knowledge and experience, but it’s a start and as Walt Disney said:

"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing."
